A Monmouth woman stuck in a Portuguese prison for almost four months has been released on bail.
25 year-old Sophie Grey, from Llangovan, was arrested at the end of April following an altercation between her boyfriend and the police.
Miss Grey was not present at the scene but became agitated at her partner's arrest and was charged with assaulting a police officer. If found guilty, the maximum sentence is a prison term of five years.
A qualified carer, Miss Grey had previously been denied bail as she has no permanent address or family links to the country.
She was finally released from the women's prison in Tires near Lisbon yesterday.
Under her bail conditions, Miss Grey has to remain within the Schengen area until her trial, which is due to begin on 22 September.
But her father Roger Grey said permission is being sought for her to be allowed to come back to the UK. She is currently staying in a hostel in Portugal.
MP for Monmouth David Davies said his constituent faced “discrimination” as a UK national unable to return home before the trial.
“As someone who spent nine years as an officer I don’t condone any behaviour against the police but it’s manifestly unfair that she’s been in prison for something like that," he said.
"I’ve spoken to an official in Portugal and I think Sophie is being discriminated against as she isn't Portuguese and doesn't have a permanent address.
“If this happened in London, if she came up and yelled at an officer, they would have told her to calm down. If she continued she might have got a public order offence but it would have been a fairly minor crime.”
Mr Davies is closely following Miss Grey's case and has previously spoken with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and the Portuguese Ambassador.
Mr Grey added: "The support of David Davies has been invaluable, it has made a difference.
"Hopefully now we will be able to get Sophie back in the UK."
