The Ukrainian community in Chepstow met the UK’s Security Minister during a party to thank the town’s residents for their support.
It comes a year after the Homes for Ukraine scheme was launched – one of the fastest, biggest and most generous visa programmes in British history.
Tom Tugendhat’s surprise visit followed an invitation by Monmouth MP David Davies.
Hosted by Ukrainian refugees, the ‘evening of gratitude’ on Saturday (29 April) at the Palmer Centre paid tribute to the people of Chepstow who have provided sanctuary to those fleeing Putin’s war.
Mr Tugendhat, who previously served with the British Army in Afghanistan, was appointed Security Minister in September 2022 by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
He reiterated the UK Government’s “steadfast support” to Ukraine and said he looked forward to the day when Ukrainians are freed from Russian aggression and able to return to their homeland.
Local MP Mr Davies said: “It was an absolute pleasure to attend this very special occasion alongside Tom Tugendhat and support the Ukrainian community in Chepstow.
“Our hearts go out to them in the way they have suffered due to Russia’s dreadful invasion. Britain will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes, and we are supporting President Zelensky in practical ways by supplying arms, weapons and military aid.
“But Saturday’s event was all about gratitude and expressing thanks to Chepstow residents who have opened their hearts and homes to Ukrainians in need.
“We heard from some of the young people who have settled into life here and there was a moving rendition of the Ukrainian national anthem.
“My thanks to Kateryna Khodzhaieva, the Rotary Club of Chepstow and District, and everyone else involved behind the scenes for putting together a wonderful event."
