MONMOUTH MP David Davies has given a resounding welcome to confirmation of the rail electrification to Swansea and the south Wales valleys.
As chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee, Mr Davies recently led a parliamentary inquiry into Inward Investment in Wales.
In its report, the committee recommended that the Government extend electrification to Swansea at the earliest opportunity and welcomed the commitment to develop a business case for electrification of the south valleys lines.
Mr Davies described Monday’s announcement by the UK Government as “fantastic news” for commuters and businesses.
“This is exactly what we have been calling for,” he said.
“Following our report into inward investment, we launched another inquiry into transport and the evidence was clearly pointing towards the importance of investing in the rail network.
“Electrification is extremely welcome news and will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to the Welsh economy.
“I am very pleased and would like to think that the work and recommendations of the Welsh Affairs Committee contributed to the decision”.
