Monmouth MP David Davies attended a packed meeting in Penallt on Saturday morning to hear complaints about the state of the roads.
About 30 villagers turned out to express their anger at the number of potholes and the lack of a decent road surface for long stretches. Many believe that the potholes have caused damage to their cars.
Mr Davies went out with local resident Ivor Gleed and was shocked by what he saw.
“The road seen in the photograph is on a bus route, yet for long stretches you could see nothing but potholes. The minor roads are even worse, some stretches were so bad that I would think that even Chaucer’s pilgrims would have travelled on better surfaces.
""As is so often the case the problem is caused by money, or rather the lack of it in Monmouthshire County Council. The formula used by the Assembly to allocate funding to local authorities takes little account of the number of miles of highway within the area even though this is clearly a major drain on expenditure. I believe that a Labour Councillor is now organising a cross party protest to the Welsh Assembly to argue for a fairer funding for Monmouthshire and I would certainly support him in this.
""However the roads here are so bad that I shall be making an appeal to the Council to ask if some extra money can be found for emergency repairs to be carried out. Up until now the accidents which these potholes have caused have involved relatively small amounts of damage to cars. However, cars swerving to avoid holes, or skidding on a broken up surfaces, could cause serious accidents involving injuries.""
