MONMOUTH MP David Davies has welcomed confirmation that out of hours general surgery is to remain at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.
Rumours have been circulating in recent weeks that services were being transferred to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, which prompted Mr Davies to write to the Chief Executive of the Aneurin Bevan Health Board.
“The Health Board has confirmed to me that no decision has been made to transfer any services, which is obviously welcome news,” said Mr Davies.
“However, I understand an issue has arisen at Nevill Hall Hospital due to difficulties in attracting junior doctors to cover specific nights. As a consequence, I’m told some patients who required overnight admission have been referred to the Royal Gwent Hospital over recent months.
“This concerns me somewhat, especially if people arriving at A&E at Nevill Hall are unable to travel to Newport to receive treatment.
“The NHS is one of only two areas of Government spending protected from spending cuts, so we should rightly expect some level of service. I have been told that the Health Board is trying to develop a plan in order to maintain a safe service, with junior doctor cover in place, and I have asked to be kept fully informed of developments”.
