LONG-awaited action to improve a dangerous Monmouth roundabout has been warmly welcomed by the town’s MP.
David Davies has received confirmation from the Welsh Government that a “number of actions” have been agreed on to improve the safety of the A40 Dixton roundabout. It follows a recent meeting attended by parent representatives from Agincourt School, Monmouthshire County Council and the South Wales Trunk Road Agency.
In a letter to Mr Davies, the Minister for Local Government and Communities Carl Sargeant AM outlined proposals including cutting the southbound carriageway’s verge and overhanging foliage to provide improved visibility to the Dixton Lane arm of the roundabout.
The provision of an additional sign warning drivers of the presence of the school is being investigated, as is the suitability of additional warning signs on the southbound carriageway. It is anticipated these signs will have flashing amber warning lights, which will be activated during times when the school crossing point is in operation.
Mr Davies said: “Every day, parents and their children face the danger of attempting to exit Agincourt School on the Dixton roundabout.
“For parents travelling from town on the A40 or from Dixton Road, it has become a constant battle having to avoid a collision with vehicles travelling in the opposite direction on the A40 from Ross-on-Wye. As a resident of Monmouth, I know this spot very well and have witnessed several near misses and accidents myself.
“I have corresponded at length with the agencies involved over the years and the Headteacher herself has worked extensively to try and get something done. I was therefore pleased to hear that a useful site meeting to run through various options took place last month and I welcome the positive suggestions that have been put forward to assist with highway safety in the area. It all sounds very promising and I look forward to seeing these proposals come to fruition.
“At present, the Welsh Government cannot commit to any re-alignment of Dixton Lane’s connection with the roundabout, as I’m told there are a number of “associated issues” relating to this proposal which would require resolving prior to any scheme being taken forward. I presume the main issue is cost related, although I’d be interested to know of any other problems and have therefore written back to the Minister to request further information.”
