DAVID Davies MP has praised the work of Monmouthshire Youth Service in helping to carry out an award-winning project at the International Youth House in Gilwern.
Mr Davies visited the International House, part of the Gilwern Outdoor Education Site, to join youth workers in celebrating winning a Youth Work Excellence Award 2011. He was accompanied by C Cllr Peter Fox, Leader of Monmouthshire County Council.
Set up to recognise the valuable contribution youth work makes to the lives of many people in Wales, the Youth Excellence Awards 2011 attracted stiff competition. The International House triumphed over six finalists to clinch the Outstanding Specialised Youth Project.
The project is the only one in Wales that actively seeks placements for those wanting to work specifically with young people in an informal setting. The International House provides accommodation for people from abroad to work with the county’s Youth Service, benefitting youngsters and communities across Monmouthshire. Two German students are currently on placement for eight weeks and in July, the project is hosting a nine month placement for two Spanish students.
Mr Davies said: “Most people who get involved with youth work do so because they want to make a real difference to their community and nowhere is this more evident than at the International House.
“I was extremely impressed by the facilities on offer. Not only are young people encouraged to share their lives and cultures with youngsters from other societies and countries, they are improving their life chances at the same time.
“This really is a fantastic project and I would like to congratulate everyone involved for their hard work, which was instrumental in winning such a prestigious award.”
Tracey Thomas, Youth and Community Officer at Monmouthshire Youth Service, added: “We were delighted to win this award and demonstrate the diversity of work Monmouthshire Youth Service does for young people locally, nationally and internationally”.
