PUPILS at Llanvihangel Crucorney Primary School ditched their uniform and donned their craziest clothes to help raise money for Wrong Trousers Day.
The youngsters each paid £1 to wear the wrong trousers in aid of Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Foundation. They were joined in their fundraising efforts by Monmouth MP Davies Davies, who took part in a special assembly.
Mr Davies gave a working demonstration of how the House of Commons operates by splitting the pupils into two sides and acting as Speaker while the aspiring politicians asked various questions. Afterwards, he explained the ceremony of the State Opening of Parliament and how the official known as Black Rod is sent to summon the Commons.
Mr Davies had been invited to visit the school after joining parent, teacher and pupil representatives at the NCPTA Gold Star Awards 2011 on board HMS Belfast in London last month, where Llanvihangel Crucornery Primary School was crowned overall winner for Wales in the PTFA Fundraising Achievement category. The PTFA had held a successful promise auction that raised nearly £2,800, enabling two classrooms to be re-carpeted and a new storage shed to be bought.
Chair of the PTFA, Jillian Probert, said: “It is so nice that David is taking an interest in our school. I was very surprised and really delighted that he took the effort to meet us on HMS Belfast, especially as he was only one of two MPs who came along.
“I would also like to thank David for a very interesting assembly. The children really enjoyed the talk he gave and took a great deal in”.
Mr Davies added: “Llanvihangel Crucorney Primary School is doing some fantastic things and I was delighted to be able to visit and help share its success.
“The pupils were particularly tickled when I told them Speakers are needed in the House of Commons to keep order because MPs are more mischievous than the average group of school children!”
