THE 1st Wyesham Merlin Scouts enjoyed a visit from Monmouth MP David Davies on Friday evening in a bid to ‘Be Prepared’ and find out more about democracy.
The Scouts are currently looking at Britain’s democratic structure from Europe, Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales through to local government. Following the recent referendum in Wales on direct law-making powers for the Assembly, the youngsters’ inspiration is their Democracy Challenge Badge.
Mr Davies was invited to come and talk to the troop at the Wyesham Scout Hut to explain how Westminster works, what his job is and how he implements his work, as well as to show that politics can be fun! Afterwards, he answered a series of questions ranging from the Queen’s role in Parliament, whether he would like to be a Minister and what action the UK is taking to help Japan recover from the earthquake and tsunami.
Anthea Dewhurst from Monmouth Town Council was also present to talk about local government.
“As an ex-Scout myself, it was an absolute pleasure to visit 1st Wyesham Merlin Scouts and I left in no doubt just how important Scouting can be to the lives of young people in our communities,” said Mr Davies.
“I was delighted to have spent an evening with some great local youngsters. We enjoyed a very lively discussion and they asked lots of questions, which certainly gave me food for thought! I wish them all the best as they work towards gaining their Democracy Challenge Badge”.
Scout Leader Kate Blair added: “This was a fabulous opportunity for the Scouts. They relished the chance to ask questions, chew over current affairs and of course impart their own advice to Mr Davies! He left them truly inspired with visions for their future and an experience they will never forget”.
