LOCAL MP David Davies has visited Royal Mail’s Monmouth Delivery Office to offer Christmas encouragement to staff at their busiest time of the year.
Mr Davies was shown around the Delivery Office in Priory Street by manager Paul Howarth and was introduced to the postmen and women working hard to sort and deliver the area’s share of the estimated total Wales postbag of more than 200 million items. He also viewed this year’s Christmas stamps, which feature pictures of the Nativity.
“The Delivery Office was a hive of activity and it was incredible to see just how much work goes into delivering post over the busy festive period,” said Mr Davies.
“Our posties do a tremendous job in delivering mail in the rural areas come rain, shine or snow and I would like to thank them for their efforts.
“I was particularly interested to hear how Royal Mail is having to adapt to meet customer needs. With more people using email and social media to stay in touch with family and friends, letters are decreasing while there has been a big increase in the number of parcels and packages being posted, largely due to the popularity of online shopping”.
Mr Howarth added: “The postal staff really do pull out all the stops to deliver the Christmas mailbag and we are pleased that Mr Davies came along to witness the hard work that goes on behind the scenes”.
The last posting dates for UK mail are 17 December for second-class items, 20 December for first-class and 22 December for Special Delivery.
