MONMOUTH MP David Davies narrowly lost his Sport Relief crown after finishing runner-up in the Westminster Mile.
Mr Davies joined over 40 MPs and Peers as they stepped out of Parliament and into St James’ Park on Wednesday 14th March to complete a mile for Sport Relief. Other participants included Welsh Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips.
First past the finish post was George Eustice MP with a time of five minutes, 28 seconds. He sliced a second off the course record held by Mr Davies, who crossed the line hot on his heels in five minutes, 36 seconds. Secretary of State the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP came home third in five minutes, 45 seconds.
“I’m a self-confessed fitness fanatic and Sport Relief is a charity event I always look forward to,” said Mr Davies.
“Naturally, I am disappointed not to have retained my crown, but it was great to see colleagues coming together for such a fantastic and worthwhile cause, regardless of their politics colours.”
With the nation gearing up for the London 2012 Olympic Games, over one million people are expected to take part in the Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 25th March. The money raised will help transform the lives of disadvantaged people in the UK and the world’s poorest countries.
