MONMOUTH MP David Davies has teamed up with the Leader of Monmouthshire County Council to oppose plans to demolish 24 garages in Portskewett and replace them with houses.
Monmouthshire Housing Association wants to knock down the garages in South Brook View and build four two-storey two-bedroom homes. MHA say the garages are vacant but during a recent site visit, Mr Davies and C Cllr Peter Fox met with local residents who claim otherwise.
“The planning application forms are inaccurate in at least one important respect – primarily that the garages are unused,” said Mr Davies.
“During our site visit, we met with local residents who opened up the garages and demonstrated they are very much in use. Indeed, some have been rented out for many years.
“It would be extremely regrettable if these garages were demolished and I fully support residents in calling for them to be kept. I shall be making my objections known to the relevant planning officer.”
C Cllr Peter Fox, who represents the ward of Portskewett, added: “This application takes no account of the use to which the garages are put. Demolishing them would also mean a whole load of extra cars on the roads of an area which is popular with young families.""
