Residents have voiced concerns to local politicians about the dangers of speeding vehicles blighting a Monmouthshire village.
A petition signed by many living in and around Llansoy has been presented to David Davies MP, calling for safety measures to be put in place.
The Monmouth MP and Cty Cllr Rachel Buckler, ward member for Devauden, met with residents on Friday (23 June).
They heard of near misses including children being in danger, residents walking along the road and nearly being run over, and cars overtaking recklessly.
Mr Davies said: “The number of people who came to see us shows how strongly the residents of Llansoy, and the surrounding area, feel about this.
“Llansoy will be part of the Wales-wide national speed limit for 30mph zone reduction to 20mph in September 2023. I strongly feel a blanket reduction in all areas in Wales is problematic, but it is evident in this situation that it is badly needed to help local residents in Llansoy.
“It was a positive meeting and good to see how a rural community can join together on important issues.”
Cllr Buckler added: “The Go Safe speed vans have stepped up their sessions in Llansoy and in doing so have caught substantial numbers of speeding motorists. But there are still constant problems with dangerous and anti-social driving through the village, adversely affecting the close-knit community of Llansoy.
“We have duly noted the strength of feeling about this. David and I will work with residents to make sure a multi-faceted approach is taken. Issues such as the extending of the 20mph limit and reducing the speed as the village is approached will be looked at.’
“Residents came up with some excellent suggestions to creatively mitigate the problems they have faced. It was agreed the way forward would be to have a constructive site visit with the highways department of Monmouthshire County Council.”
