MPs, Councillors and the police today paid tribute to local pensioner Joan Ward who saw off a couple of burglars forcing them to flee empty handed. Nick Ramsay who champions issues for older people, congratulated Mrs Ward and urged anyone confronted by callers to check their identity and not to let them in if they had any doubts.
Local MP David Davies, who has recently completed a Parliamentary placement with Gwent police, recommended that elderly people who are worried about crime ring their local police station and ask about the ""Bobby van scheme.""
The aim of the scheme is to secure the homes of the elderly, or vulnerable people by fitting security devices such as door locks, door chains, spy holes, window locks, and other similar items. This is done free of charge.
Priority is given to those who have good reason to feel vulnerable such as elderly people living alone. Anyone interested can find out more by telephoning 01633 245202 .
