MONMOUTH MP David Davies has welcomed the announcement by the Department for Transport that Post Office Ltd has been awarded a new contract to provide DVLA services.
Motorists will be able to buy vehicle tax discs at the post office for another seven years under a £450 million contract, which will also allow the network to run applications for driving licences and changes to licence photocards.
The existing contract between Post Office Ltd and DLVA was set to expire in March, prompting a campaign for renewal spearheaded by the National Federation of Subpostmasters.
Mr Davies said the decision was excellent news for local communities.
“I have been inundated by postcards, letters and emails from residents and subpostmasters across Monmouthshire in support of the Post Office’s bid to retain the DLVA contract and I pay tribute to their efforts,” he said.
“Local post offices sit at the heart of community life and this decision will ensure the public and businesses will continue to have convenient access to essential services.
“I congratulate the Post Office and am confident they will deliver an excellent service whilst continuing to secure and develop a modern network into the future.”
