WHEN Mrs Sophie Weir decided to take in the washing of US servicemen based near Chepstow during the Second World War, little could she have realised she would give birth to a multi-million pound family export business that has grown with each generation.
HJ Weir Engineering, which is currently run by father and son team Rob and Ross Weir, now employs 50 local people and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of specialist laundry equipment. The company makes machinery used by hotels, hospitals, prisons and establishments which process large quantities of washing.
Despite the global recession, business is booming with orders coming in from developing countries like China and South Africa as well as the more established markets in North America.
Monmouth MP David Davies recently visited HJ Weir at its plant on Bulwark Industrial Estate to find out more about what has turned a local family business into a worldwide success.
Mr Davies said: ""The story of how one lady taking in washing has been transformed into a major manufacturing firm still run by family members is inspirational.
“It is companies like HJ Weir which will lead Britain out of recession and provide an example of what can be achieved for anyone thinking of setting up their own business.”
Managing Director Rob Weir added: “Hard work and reputation for good customer service has enabled us to be successful in a tough business environment.
“We have to compete against low cost manufacturers from China but we have absolutely no intention of moving from the area.
""We were delighted to welcome Mr Davies to see for himself what a small family business can achieve.""
