Monmouth MP David Davies visited the Ladbrokes Coral shop in Abergavenny on Friday (13 April) to place a charity bet ahead of the Grand National.
Watched by an estimated 600 million people across 140 countries, the Grand National is the world's most famous steeplechase.
It is believed that around half the entire UK adult population has a flutter on the race.
Mr Davies was offered a free £50 bet, with any winnings going to support local causes.
He said: “The Grand National is a terrific event and I was delighted to be given the chance of a sporting wager - for charity of course!
“I thought that ‘Perfect Candidate’ would be a good choice. Sadly, he didn’t do very well and fell at the first fence.
“If anyone remembers, I can probably expect some teasing the next time there is an election.”
Grainne Hurst, director of corporate and industry affairs at Ladbrokes Coral, added: “The Grand National is one of the busiest times of the year in our shops where lots of people go to have a small flutter and enjoy the racing.
“I would like to thank David Davies for visiting us in Abergavenny to meet the staff and see the general excitement amongst customers.”
