MONMOUTH MP David Davies has praised the work of local bespoke window and door manufacturer Coed Derwen, after visiting the company’s headquarters in Abergavenny.
Mr Davies was a special guest at the company’s offices at the Union Road Industrial Estate, where he learnt more about its work and the positive impact it is having upon the environment.
The company was launched in December 2005 and is the latest arm of the continually expanding Anthony A. Davies Group, which employs more than 70 people.
It is one of the ‘greenest’ of its kind in Wales, using timber not usually converted for joinery purposes from renewable sources in the Wentwood Forest of the Wye Valley and the Pembrokeshire Timber Initiative. Even the manufacturing process is eco-friendly, minimising on waste and enabling high levels of material optimisation.
Said Mr Davies: “From an environmental point of view it’s very good to see that hard wood is being used in a sustainable way. Not only are the forests used by the company being renewed and replaced, the trees do not have to be transported very far too, again helping the environment.
“Another positive is to see the Monmouthshire economy benefit so much from the company’s expansion, with further employment.
“It’s a pleasure to see a local business that I have known for so long, grow and develop like it has done. That is of course down to the hard work of the company’s directors, Anthony and Dawn Davies.”
Managing Director Anthony Davies said: “We were delighted to hear such positive comments from Mr Davies, who has always taken a keen interest in us as a local business.”
Since launching last December, the company has featured on the Discovery Real Time Channel and secured a number of high-profile contracts including designing and manufacturing the windows for the University of Wales’ new Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Bangor.
In the next 12 months it is looking to increase its turnover to £1million, whilst still remaining committed to protecting the environment. Earlier this year the company funded the planting of 2000 oak trees at Trellech in Monmouthshire and has similar plans for the future.
