David Davies, the Conservative MP for Monmouth, today called on the police to investigate the words and actions of a Muslim extremist following reports that he yesterday called for the execution of the Pope in addition to anyone else who “insults” Islam. In a letter to the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Mr. Davies has stated that the words of Anjem Choudary, recorded at a protest against the Pope’s recent speech in Bavaria, “offer a clear incitement to murder” and that as a result Mr. Choudary’s actions should be investigated as a matter of urgency. Speaking from Monmouth today, Mr. Davies said, “I am shocked and appalled that this violent and ill-conceived outburst has not already been taken up by the police. For such an influential man to demand that the head of the Catholic Church be executed is, to my mind, clearly offering encouragement to militant individuals to commit the most heinous of crimes. The fact that this protest occurred outside Westminster Cathedral was clearly designed to anger and intimidate Catholics and provoke the Christian community at large. “I have written to Iain Blair to demand that he takes this matter with the same seriousness as he would if any religious minority leader were to be publicly threatened with death. It will be interesting to see whether the police will act with the same speed and efficiency as they did when a protestor was arrested and charged in Cardiff recently after handing out Bible passages at a gay festival. “I fully believe that freedom of speech is the backbone of our democracy, but reckless, dangerous and militant views such as this, when expressed publicly should be investigated with the full force of the law. This is exactly the sort of divisive statement that leads to distrust and dislike amongst Britain’s varied communities and we need to take a clear stand and let Mr. Choudary and others of a similar mind that this is simply unacceptable. “Further, as a practicing Christian I feel that my rights and beliefs should be protected with the same thoroughness as those of any other citizen and I look to the police to ensure that this is the case.”
