Local MP David Davies joined publican Barry Walden at Ponthir House to toast to the success of the pub’s opening today.
The Monmouth MP toured the revamped premises, located in the village of Ponthir on the outskirts of Newport, following a £160,000 investment from national pub operator Punch.
A friendly and welcoming pub, Barry is keen to firmly establish Ponthir House as the focal point of the community once again.
The investment has seen the pub’s interior sympathetically updated, retaining a traditional yet contemporary feel. Everything has been modernised, with new flooring, fixtures and fittings and brand new furniture, as well as a new kitchen and toilets.
Externally, the pub has improved lighting and signage to attract passers-by, along with new garden furniture and planters to update the patio area and large beer garden.
Barry took over the pub in September and is a first-time landlord. But with plenty of experience in the catering and service industry, he is excited about the prospect of developing his business in partnership with Punch.
He explains: “I am really excited about the new look of the pub and I’m delighted it’s now a welcoming and relaxed place to enjoy food and drink.
“Thanks to the investment from Punch and the support and training they’ve provided, I have a pub to be proud of.”
Commenting on the success of the investment, David Davies MP said: “I was delighted to visit Ponthir House and see the transformation myself.
“It’s great that this local pub can now welcome the local community and I’m happy to raise a glass to its future success. I wish Barry the very best.”
The family-friendly pub offers a range of real ales, lagers, ciders, wines and spirits. It also offers a traditional good quality pub menu using seasonal and local produce, as well as regular events including quizzes, live music and BBQs in the summer.
Chris Payne, new business development manager at Punch, added: “The refurbishment has made a big difference to Ponthir House.
“I’m sure Barry has the expertise and enthusiasm to develop a successful business and I have no doubt that he will establish the pub as a welcoming place to enjoy a drink and a tasty meal.
“We look forward to working with Barry to provide support to help him achieve this.”
