Llanfoist Fawr Primary School has been presented with a ceremonial flag designed by pupils as part of a nationwide project.
David Davies MP gifted the 12ft by 6ft flag, featuring the iconic Monnow Bridge in Monmouth, to the school after it was displayed in London’s Parliament Square and at Runnymede meadow in commemoration of two important events.
Designed by Year 6 pupils, the flag was selected by Mr Davies to represent Monmouthshire in the 2015 Flag Project.
The unique parliamentary project forms part of the Houses of Parliament’s public programme, Parliament in the Making, which aims to connect young people with the democratic process and celebrates two major anniversaries this year - the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta (1215) and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Monfort Parliament.
The flag – one of 80 representing each historic county in the UK - flew at both the national commemoration of the Great Charter at Runnymede on June 15 and in Parliament Square from 18-22 May to mark the recalling of Parliament after the general election.
Mr Davies said: “Flags are one of the key ways in which individual and group identities are represented around the world, making them a perfect vehicle to encapsulate a project celebrating 750 years of political representation in the UK.
“It was thrilling to see the culmination of this fantastic parliamentary initiative, which has enabled participants to learn about their democratic heritage through creative work, so colourfully on display on such prominent platforms.
“I was extremely proud to have our constituency and county represented by Llanfoist Fawr Primary School.”
