An MP was “lovin’ it” when he had the chance to flip burgers as McDonald’s celebrates 50 years in the UK.
David Davies tried his hand at making a signature Big Mac at the Abergavenny branch on Friday (3 May).
The US fast-food giant opened its first restaurant in Woolwich, southeast London, in 1974. 10 years later, McDonald’s came to Cardiff in Wales.
Opening its doors in 2016, the Abergavenny restaurant on Iberis Road near Llanfoist is a huge local employer – with 108 members of staff, most of whom are part-time.
Monmouth MP Mr Davies was invited to visit by McDonald’s franchisee David Balcombe.
“2024 marks a significant year as McDonald’s celebrates its 50th anniversary in the UK and it was great to join the team in Abergavenny,” said Mr Davies.
“There is a fantastic community feel at the Abergavenny restaurant. I enjoyed getting hands on and meeting staff members.
“I am a big fan of McDonald’s myself and there is nothing quite like a Big Mac after a long canvassing session! All of the beef for the iconic burgers is sourced from British and Irish farmers.
“It’s a good company to work for with a clear commitment to investing and supporting people, suppliers and the communities it serves.”
McDonald’s has a series of special events lined up to kick-start the 50th anniversary celebrations, including the launch of its new Makin’ It communities initiative.
As the country’s biggest private sector youth employer, McDonald’s has expended its partnership with BBC Children in Need over the last 18 months to build Makin’ It – a programme that gives 16-24 year-olds a welcoming and safe space to seek support.
Restaurants are paired with local youth projects and youth workers to facilitate regular drop-in sessions, workshops, training and informal meetings.
Mr Balcombe, who owns and operates the Abergavenny restaurant, added: “We had a great time hosting David and were delighted to update him on the amazing initiatives we are implementing throughout the year.
“We are particularly excited to evolve the important work we do with young people and youth groups across Wales as part of our newly launched Makin’ It project.”
