A flag designed by local primary school children has taken its place at Westminster to mark the culmination of a unique parliamentary project.
Llanfoist Fawr Primary School was chosen by Monmouth MP David Davies to represent the constituency in the 2015 Flag Project.
To coincide with the week the new Parliament met for the first time since the general election, the flag was among 80 flying in London’s Parliament Square from 18-22 May.
Created by Year 6 pupils and hand-stitched using traditional methods, the design features Monmouth’s iconic Monnow Bridge in colours symbolising both Wales and the historic county of Monmouthshire.
More than 450 schools from across the UK took part in the nationwide project to commemorate two important anniversaries this year - the 800th year of the sealing of the Magna Carta (1215) and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort Parliament (1265).
As part of the Magna Carta celebrations at Runnymede, Llanfoist Fawr Primary School’s flag has also been selected to fly at a special event attended by the Queen on June 15.
Mr Davies said: “I am delighted to have been involved with a project delivering both a cultural and democratic legacy for the young participants and our community.
“I was thrilled to see the Monmouthshire flag flying on such a prominent platform in Parliament Square and we should all feel incredibly proud of what the pupils at Llanfoist Fawr Primary School have achieved.”
