David Davies has admitted he’s not much of a betting man and a recent flutter on the horses proved that.
The Monmouth MP placed a charity bet at the William Hill branch in Abergavenny town centre during a visit to learn more about the gambling industry. But his horse failed to come up trumps.
Fortunately, the bet was honoured by the bookmaker and Mr Davies will be donating £100 to the Royal British Legion.
“As we approach Remembrance Day, veterans and serving members of the armed forces are quite rightly at the forefront of people’s minds and I am extremely grateful to William Hill for allowing me to make a donation to this very worthwhile charity,” he said.
Mr Davies was invited to visit the betting shop on Frogmore Street by the Association of British Bookmakers. He met with staff and customers to discuss a range of issues including responsible gaming measures, new player limits on gaming machines, and legislative proposals to replace the existing horserace betting levy with a horserace betting right.
Ralitsa Vasilovska from William Hill added: “We’re very pleased David was able to come along to meet the hard working staff and see for himself what we are doing to promote responsible gambling.
“We are committed to working with the communities where we operate and look forward to launching our new community initiative ‘Close to Home’ in Abergavenny at the beginning of 2016."
