Monmouth MP David Davies has sworn allegiance to the Queen in English and Welsh during the traditional oath taking ceremony at the House of Commons.
Mr Davies, who was re-elected for a third term, shook hands with the Speaker and made his oath on Wednesday (20th May) in a ritual that dates back at least 400 years.
MPs are required to swear in at the start of the new Parliament before they are able to participate in a debate, vote or even sit down on the iconic green benches.
Members must either “swear by Almighty God” using their choice of holy book or “affirm” if they do not wish to take a religious oath.
The oath has to be read in English but Mr Davies also performed it in Welsh (Y Llw), choosing the New Testament.
“Parliament loves its traditions and the swearing-in process is taken very seriously,” he said.
“It is a huge honour and privilege to represent the Monmouth constituency and I was pleased to be able to support the Welsh language, especially as Abergavenny is hosting the National Eisteddfod of Wales next year.”
