The EU referendum campaign moved up a gear on Saturday as pro-Brexit volunteers hit the streets of Monmouth to try to win over voters.
David Davies MP, who is taking a prominent role in the Vote Leave campaign, hailed a “hugely positive response” and said he was delighted by the level of support from local people.
Britons will head to the polls on Thursday 23 June to decide whether the UK should remain a member state of the European Union.
“It is time we took back control of our laws, our money and our borders,” said Mr Davies.
“More than half of the UK’s laws and regulations are set in Brussels by 28 unelected European Commissioners. We don’t know who they are and we have no way of getting rid of them.
“They are taking £350m a week from the British taxpayer and yet their own auditors cannot sign off the books and account for the money.
“Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has caused an immigration disaster by opening her country’s borders to unregistered refugees. This has led to utter chaos with millions of mainly young men crossing illegally into the EU.
“Now Germany wants to get out of the mess it has created by allocating quotas of illegal migrants across the EU.”
With the fifth biggest economy in the world, Mr Davies said the UK has “nothing to fear” from leaving.
“We can continue to trade with the EU but strike our own trade deals with the rest of the world,” he added.
“I am very much looking forward to the campaign in the weeks ahead. I would be only too happy to speak to any groups or take part in public debates on the referendum as I believe this will be the most important vote of our lifetime.”
